NOT SO HIDDEN TREASURES

I'm still trying to figure out why I've lived in Vegas for over 5 years and only yesterday experienced for the first time the wonder that is the Casablanca Spa and Resort. For a measly 149 dollars (and your taxes and fees are included) you get the following:

1. Hotel room with 2 queen beds
2. 2 massages (or 2 golf packages, or 1 of each)
3. All day access to heated mineral pools, hot tubs, a juice bar, the eucalyptus steam room, fluffy white robes with slippers, and the 'quiet room' with fruits, drinks, and a big screen TV

It was phenomenal!! Plus the staff are ridiculously friendly. When I realized I had forgotten my swimming suit, and saw that the only ones they had were 80 dollars, they actually took my recommendation of hooking me up, and gave it to me for 1/2 off, even though it wasn't on sale. Thank you Casablanca Spa and Resort! You made my first official 'vacation' of the year a smashing success!

DON'T GIVE UP!

There's a commercial running in Vegas for a company that sponsors funds for new inventions. Apparently someone named 'Bob' invented some sort of a car wash for kids to ride their bikes through on hot, summer days. The purpose of the commercial is to encourage people to send in their ideas and get funding to make it work. My favorite part is the disclaimer they say at the very end:

"Bob's results are not typical and most inventions do not result in success." Way to keep it real, folks!

RAINY DAYS

There's something about the sound and smell of falling rain that makes me want to sit lazily on a porch swing and sip hot cocoa. I don't have a porch swing yet, and the only 'just add water' thing I have is herbal tea, which doesn't strike me as a rainy day drink, so I'm going to settle for a warm blanket and some pajamas with fuzzy socks. Delightful!

AGILITY TRAINING

When I got Jack the Dog he came from a home with a young girl with MR. She had little tolerance for the dogs and would take a rolled up newspaper and smack them with it when they annoyed her or were barking. It was disheartening to see, and her parents tried their best to redirect her, but it has resulted in a dog with little trust. When I first brought him home, and he thought he was in trouble, he would immediately run and hide under the bed, or he would coward into a little ball. It was sad to watch. Over the last couple of years, and as he got older, he has become better, and trusts people better as he gets to know them. You can imagine my frustration when a guy came over to our house a couple of months ago who obviously did NOT like dogs, and kicked at Jack to get him out of the way. I was livid, but we won't go into my thoughts on that. Since then, Jack has started nipping at the feet of people who come into the house, and if someone stands up unexpectedly, he goes into attack mode. He even does it with my roommate, who he has always known. It is incredibly frustrating. It was then escalated by two weeks of having a constant flow of people coming in and out of the house to visit my roommate, who had broken her leg. The perfect storm!I've done all sorts of research on how to change his behavior, and have even talked to my boss about it, who is a dog trainer, but it basically comes down to him trusting people - again. Grrr!! Lots of positive reinforcement, patience, and working one-on-one with him. I figured we needed something different, so starting Monday, I'm taking Jack to a 6 week agility training course! Hooray! I'm excited about it and can't want to see how he responds to it. It will get both of us outside and playing together, and it will teach him discipline and routines. A win-win situation. Here's to hoping for a better Jack....

THINGS YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE

Last night when I was upstairs cleaning my room the fire alarms in the house started to go off. There was some cooking going on downstairs so I didn't think much of it, but after a few minutes I could smell smoke. When I went into the kitchen I was met with a thin, white haze and when the oven was opened, there was a wall (my dramatic embellishment) of flame coming out of the top. I immediately found myself going through the following thought process:
1. There are flames in a gas stove.....GAS stove!

2. What happens if it starts something else on fire?

3. I seriously can't afford to buy a stove right now!
4. Where the h... is the fire extinguisher I put in the closet?!?!?!?!
Needless to say it was quickly taken care of, but I had one of those moments where I realized how much better it is when you're renting and not as responsible for things that take place. Sigh. Now we just need to febreeze the house :)

AND IT BEGINS

I'm surprisingly excited about the start of this new year. As I was contemplating as to why I've had this sudden paradigm shift, I realized that it's because I've decided to change my focus this year from 'survive' to 'thrive!' Last year was a combination of good experiences, mingled with pushing out some of the excess emotions of the year before. This year it's time to take the bull by the horns. I am looking forward to positive experiences and I have an overwhelming desire to just be HAPPY!! And not to just be happy, but to be acutely aware of the things that make me happy. I'm looking forward to my new focus, and I'm looking forward to my new year! Happy 2010!

A NOT SO HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR SOME

Yesterday at 6:30 my roommate, Melissa, left to go walk down the street to the store before getting ready for her New Years festivities. As she was walking out the door I said to her "don't get hit by a car. That would be a crappy way to start your year!" She's so disobedient! Seven hours later we were back from the trauma center at UMC and creating a make-shift downstairs bedroom until she can get surgery on her broken leg next week.
She's such a sport! As she was laying in the examination room, surrounded by machines and sounds, I asked her if there was anything she wanted us to get ready for her at home. She said she just wanted to toast the New Years. We were an hour after midnight by the time we got around to it, but we celebrated it nevertheless! Cheers and Happy New Year from the Wildwood Glen Hospital!!
