Being home for a week gave me the chance to catch up on some reading, which is something I almost never do anymore but in the past have LOVED to do! I would absolutely recommend both of these books, but for obvious, different reasons:
#1: Marley and Me by John Grogan: "The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life." John Grogan was a newspaper journalist and columnist who would write stories about Marley, his dog, and eventually turned them into a book about his experiences with him. I've read this once before and but wanted to re-read it during Christmas, and before I see the movie. Even if you don't like dogs, you'll enjoy this book. It may make you never want to get a dog, but you'll still like the book!
#2: Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza: "Immaculee Ilibagiza grew up in a country she loved, surrounded by a family she cherished. But in 1994 her idyllic world was ripped apart as Rwanda descended into a bloody genocide. Her family was brutally murdered during a killing spree that lasted three months and claimed the lives of nearly a million Rwandans. Miraculously, Immaculee survived the slaughter. For 91 days, she and seven other women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor's home while hundreds of machete-wielding killers hunted for them. It was during those endless hours of unspeakable terror that Immaculee discovered the power of prayer, eventually shedding her fear of death and forging a profound and lasting relationship with God. She emerged from her bathroom hideout having truly discovered the meaning of unconditional love - a love so strong that she was able to seek out and forgive her family's killers. The triumphant story of this remarkable woman's journey through the darkness of genocide will inspire anyone whose life has been touched by fear, suffering, and loss." The inside of the book cover doesn't do this book justice! The experiences that this woman had are unbelievable in itself, but the strenth and spirit that she found in the middle of her adversity is inspiring. Reading about her life made me want to be a better person! This is a book I will read over and over again.
I'm a 30 something year old living in Vegas and wondering when I'll get used to the summers. I love to travel, be with friends, and be outside with my dog, Jack. Life is good. No complaints here.
"Don't ever be afraid to let yourself go. Dream high. Shoot for the moon. If you miss it, reach out and grab a star."
"Be the change you want to see in the world" - Ghandi
"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain."
"Perhaps all the questions we ask of love, to measure, test, probe, and save it, have the additional effect of cutting it short. Perhaps the reason we are unable to love is that we yearn to be loved, that is, we demand something (love) from our partner instead of delivering ourselves to them demand-free and asking for nothing but their company." -Milan Kundera 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being'.....I'd also like to give a shout out to Brooke Hart for introducing me to this quote.
"Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle."
1. The gospel doesn't make our lives perfect, but it gives us a perfect perspective
2. We don't necessarily have to change friends when we realize and accept that our friends are going to change
3. Things are usually better in the morning, but sometimes they're better the very same day with the right people in your life
4. There are certain things that I shouldn't have to, and won't put up with
5. There are a thousand reasons to be happy every day
6. Your trials may not appear as significant as someone else's, but they're still yours, so don't feel like you have to make them insignificant
7. I can get through anything with the support of family and friends that love me and want nothing but good things for me
8. The world is full of endless possibilities for adventures and joy
9. God knows me - and loves me - and is my greatest advocate in this world
10. You should never take advantage of a meaningful friendship, of a good dessert, of the little things that make you smile, of the positive effects of others around you, of simple comforts, and of the blessings in your life on a daily basis
